From Data to Decisions

How real-time environments are changing the way design, training and operational decisions get made in the built environment. Most organisations already hold more data than they can act on. Models, surveys, sensor feeds and asset records sit in systems built to store information rather than to help anyone decide what to do with it. This paper looks at what changes when that data is brought into a real-time environment, and examines three projects in detail: an operational digital twin at Argonne National Laboratory, immersive training at Jacobs, and computational masterplanning at Buro Happold.Operational: live asset data in a navigable model, so an intervention can be tested before it is committed to.
Scenario: rehearsal for the situations that are too rare, too costly or too hazardous to practise any other way.
Design: options generated, compared and interrogated with the client in the room.
